Historic Southern Charm
In the Heart of Downtown Mobile

The Diocese of Mobile has continued to own the home since it was purchased by Bishop Michael Portier in 1834.  The house served as the residence of the first five Bishops of Mobile until 1906.  It has since then served the Catholic Daughters of America during the Great Depression, was a USO hall during WWII and has been leased to several families as their home over the years.  In recent years the Archdiocese of Mobile has used the house for priests to vest prior to celebrations at the Cathedral. The residence was restored by the Diocese of Mobile in 1958 and in 1970 it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The most recent renovations have taken place in 2007 and many of the antique furnishings date back to the French Empire period.  The Portier House is open Tuesday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for historic tours and to visit our gift shop of souvenirs and religious items.  The House is also available for private events and reception rentals.  To book a group tour or private party, please call 251-441-7138.
